Family log cabin holidays: what to look for

Sleeping space, hot tub safety, pools for rainy days and how to pick a park that keeps everyone happy.

Wellies by the door, marshmallows on sticks and children who fall asleep the moment their heads touch the pillow. A cabin is a brilliant family holiday – here is how to choose a good one.

Check how the beds work

“Sleeps 6” can mean three double rooms or a double, a twin and a sofa bed. Look at the bedroom layout on the provider’s listing before you book, especially with older children.

Hot tubs and children

Many cabins with hot tubs have rules for children – a minimum age, or adult supervision at all times. Lids should be locked when the tub isn’t in use. Check the listing if you have little ones.

A pool for rainy days

British weather being what it is, a swimming pool on site can rescue a wet afternoon. Use the “With a pool” filter to find parks with one.

Parks or single cabins?

Lodge parks often have play areas, fishing lakes and on-site activities, and other families to play with. Single cabins on farms or in woodland are quieter and feel more like a real escape. Both work – it depends on what your family enjoys.

Getting there

With small children, a two- or three-hour drive is about the limit for a short break. Use the map on any location page to see what is closest to you.
